Fostering Pathways For Diverse Talent in Tech

Mission

My passion for design has extended beyond my UX design role to a dedication connecting youth and diverse talent to the tech field.

I have been lucky enough to cross paths with mentors who inspired me to pursue the UX field, but I know not everyone has access to these opportunities. If we want to build an industry representative of the clients we serve each an everyday, then we need to create pathways for education and mentorship. When I am not working my 9-5, I spend my time presenting workshops for non-profits and universities, I am an adjunct professor at Drexel University, and I am a mentor for the Collective Success Network.

This is a recording of my UX Made Easy Workshop that I presented during the global Techsgiving Summit. This is a condensed presentation and not the full interactive version of my workshop.

Workshop

My workshops are open to anyone looking for guidance and tools that facilitate in the transition into the UX field. They are beginner friendly interactive sessions available both in person or virtually. I am currently developing my next workshop that will be released in 2022.

Teaching

As a teacher I focus on making design content that is relatable and easy for my students to apply. I teach fundamental design principles and UX methodologies to show students how to use these tools to solve real world problems. My teaching style is interactive, and adapts to the pace of the class I work with.

Mentorship

The key to anyones success is a strong network. Being a woman of color, I am passionate about being a mentor that offers representation in the tech field. I focus on fostering relationships with mentees that reinforce their strengths, and provide resources that hone in on areas they can grow.

I have taught classes at Drexel for the past 2 years. I also sit in on classes at UPenn, University of The Arts, and West Chester PA University. During these sessions, I am able to share my experiences working in the UX field and provide feedback on their projects. These classes are great opportunities to expose students to real job experiences and provide an outside perspective.

Worked With:

Chelsea is incredibly respectful to her students, provides honest, helpful, and timely feedback, and puts in far more than the minimum effort needed to run this class. Taking the time to engage students with discussion topics at the beginning of class, especially in a room where it can be hard to get people to talk, was a treat every class period. She was always a fair grader and ready to provide help if you need it. You can tell that she really cares about the success of each student.

Chels was a pleasure to work with. She presented a workshop on User Experience for our community members and everyone learned so much. I can see how Chels would be a tremendous asset to any team.

I liked how detailed Chelsea was when she described the processes involved in UI/UX.

I thought it was a great introduction to UX and overview of the process. The hands on activities help illustrate the concepts being taught, and gave us an opportunity to apply.
