Fostering Pathways For Diverse Talent in Tech

Mission

My passion for design extends beyond my role as a UX designer to a dedication to connecting youth and diverse talent to the tech industry.

I’ve been fortunate to have inspiring mentors who guided me to pursue a career in UX design. Now, I’m committed to ensuring that everyone has access to similar opportunities. To build an industry that truly represents our clients, we must create pathways for education and mentorship. When I’m not working my 9-5, I spend my time mentoring, and leading workshops for non-profits and universities. I previously taught at Drexel University in Philadelphia and currently teach at Howard University where I created a 15-week UX curriculum.

This is a recording of my UX Made Easy Workshop, which I presented during the global Techsgiving Summit in 2022. It is a condensed presentation, not the full interactive version.

Workshop

My workshops are open to anyone seeking guidance and tools to transition into the UX field. They are beginner-friendly and interactive, available in person or virtually. The workshop’s subject matter and examples can be customized to meet client goals.

Teaching

As a teacher, I prioritize creating design content that is relatable and easy for my students to apply. I teach fundamental design principles and UX methodologies to demonstrate how to use these tools to solve real-world problems. My teaching style is project-based and interactive, adapting to the pace of the class I work with.

Mentorship

The key to success for anyone is a strong network. As a woman of color, I am passionate about being a mentor who provides representation in the tech field. I focus on building relationships with mentees that reinforce their strengths and provide resources to help them grow in areas where they can improve.

Connecting with the community is what drives me. I have partnered with various organizations across the East Coast, working with youth, college students, and adult career transitioners. Empowering diverse talent to pursue tech is how we create an industry representative of the world we serve.

Worked With:

Chelsea is incredibly respectful to her students, provides honest, helpful, and timely feedback, and puts in far more than the minimum effort needed to run this class. Taking the time to engage students with discussion topics at the beginning of class, especially in a room where it can be hard to get people to talk, was a treat every class period. She was always a fair grader and ready to provide help if you need it. You can tell that she really cares about the success of each student.

Student Drexel University

Chels was a pleasure to work with. She presented a workshop on User Experience for our community members and everyone learned so much. I can see how Chels would be a tremendous asset to any team.

I liked how detailed Chelsea was when she described the processes involved in UI/UX.

I thought it was a great introduction to UX and overview of the process. The hands on activities help illustrate the concepts being taught, and gave us an opportunity to apply.
